M'bute Pygmy Bark Cloth Paintings
HOME
African Textiles
The paintings below were made by M'bute Pygmy people living in the Ituri Rain Forest of the Congo, mostly in the 1930s.  The fabric is a pounded tree bark; the painting was done supposedly with a mixture of gardenia juice and carbon black.

Rarely are these pieces flat. Instead they have rippled, three-dimensional textured surfaces. They are most effective mounted and displayed in shadow-box frames that allow their natural three-dimensional qualities to be enjoyed.  Many can be mounted either horizontally or vertically.
