African Masks and Sculptures

HOME

Here we offer a selection of masks and sculptures from Sub-Saharan Africa. Stunning aesthetic objects, the masks were essential parts of fabric or raffia costumes.

The carved masks played roles in both sacred tribal rituals and profane celebrations.  Often combining anthropomorphic and zoomorphic features, they were used in three primary stages of African tribal life:  fertility rites, initiations into adult life, and funerals.  They often represented ancestral spirits that helped to create bonds between the living and dead.  They were personifications of spirits who could intervene in daily village life.  Though the sculptors worked within the framework of traditional norms, creative individuals produced an amazing variety of superb three-dimensional objects.

As these are ethnographic objects, used over a period of several years in tribal rituals, they all display signs of wear.
