|Katu Beaded Tube Skirt
Attapoeu Province, Laos.
Cotton warp-faced weave, with beads.
27"x 30½." This soft cotton weaving, with its warp stripes, could be opened at the side seam for display if desired, making a piece 54"x 30½." The beading on these garments was done in an unusual way: the tiny white beads were not sewn on, but rather were threaded onto weft yarns and positioned as desired as the weaving progressed. Similar pieces have been made by the Ta-oi, in areas along the Lao/Vietnamese border. This example is only about 10 years old, but the colors are soft, not garish. $225
