Mien Yao Apron of Baby Carrier
Northern Thai/Lao border area

Cotton appliqué, silk cross-stitch embroidery, silk hand-made braid outlining, and metallic ornaments.  29½"x 25" plus 60"ties. Dramatic pieces like this were worn as aprons or capes for weddings and special occasions and then were often converted to use as baby carriers. The very long ties on this example suggest that it was indeed used for a baby.  This piece is 15 to 30 years old and is in excellent condition.  $450
