Leishan. Guizhou, China
Silk embroidery on cotton. Several embroidery techniques were used on this elaborately detailed jacket: silk satin stitch, cross stitch, and chain stitch, along with appliquéd braid and folded silk triangles. There are also a couple of rows of backstitching on the collar that look at first glance like perfect machine stitching! They are not. All of the work is very accomplished and the approximately 50-year-old garment is in excellent condition. It is suitable for either display or wearing; it can be worn open and straight as in the photos, or with the front panels wrapped diagonally as done by the Miao.
