MARLA MALLETT: TEXTILES

Japanese Hikizuri
Kyoto. 1950s.
Young performing geisha's ivory sheer ro silk gauze kimono with silk, gold and silver embroidery depicting cranes and cherry blossoms. Silver lamé lining and narrow padded hem. 53"across shoulders; 71"long. Normally kimonos are long, as they were pulled up to the exact length desired and the excess folded under the tightly bound obi. But hikizuri were cut still longer, and furnished with a lightly padded hem. Such a garment was worn so that it draped on the floor and swirled in graceful arcs. Geisha's garments usually received hard wear, but this dramatic example has survived in very good condition.   $2900
