Malatya Kilim
Eastern Anatolia.  Circa 1900

Wool and white cotton.  31"x 12.'  (80 x 366 cm).  Slit tapestry.
Stark white cotton is used in this piece for bold contrast. The piece is in superb condition.  There is no evidence on this kilim that it was ever attached to another part. Pairs of such pieces were often used as dust covers over rows of storage sacks in the nomad's tent or as divan covers in winter village houses.  Because such pieces are often mistakenly perceived as "half" kilims, good examples can be among the best kilim buys.
