Kashmir Shawl
India. Circa 1865

Wool. 75"x 77." Hand-woven in a double interlocked twill tapestry structure; embroidered borders.  This shawl was done in the "patchwork" style, with small, intricate parts woven separately and then joined. The embroidered border is nicer than most. The piece is in excellent condition. The astonishing fineness of this weave is truly remarkable. These were the shawls that were copied in England and France on jacquard looms. $1950
